Welcome

It is my pleasure to invite you to attend the II International Workshop on Floral Biology and S-Incompatibility in Fruit Species that will take place in Murcia (Spain) on 23-26th May 2016. This Workshop is supported by the ISHS Commission of Molecular Biology and In Vitro Culture, Section of Pome and Stone Fruits, and Workgroup of Reproductive Biology in Fruit Trees.

In this second edition of the International Workshop different aspects of floral biology of fruit species such as flower morphology, sexuality, dormancy, flowering, pollination, fertilization and fruit development will be considered. Self-incompatibility will also be treated from different angles, including structural and functional aspects, genetics, S-genotyping, genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics. All these subjects will be discussed in different oral and poster sessions. The oral sessions will be led by worldwide recognized keynote speakers. Among the different scientific activities scheduled, a technical and cultural visit will take place the last day of the Worskshop.

The workshop will be held in Murcia, a city located in a Region of the South-East of Spain with a Mediterranean climate and a rich horticultural tradition. The Region of Murcia is a major producer of vegetables and fruits (mainly stone fruits and citrics), which are exported to the rest of Europe. Wines and olive oil are also produced in the inner part of the Region. Murcia also has a great touristic attraction not only because of the climate but also for its unique cuisine and the historical heritage.

I encourage the colleagues from different parts of the world to attend the Workshop, since it will be a great opportunity to discuss on the recent advances in floral biology and self-incompatibility in fruit species.

Looking forward to meet you in Murcia in May 2016.
Cordially,
The Convener, on behalf of the Organizing Committee.
